About Rational Rankings
NFL power rankings are updated weekly. Teams are grouped into one of
four categories and listed in order of rank. Differences of three or fewer
positions in rank are usually not meaningful. The Rational Rankings are
based on factors that are similar but not identical to those the Rational
Sports Machine uses to make its game-level picks and predictions.
While a team's rank is an important part of determining its chances for
victory against another team, the Rational Sports Machine takes other
factors into account to make its predictions. Analysis shows that the better
team wins because it's the better team only about half the time in the NFL.
The other half of the time, the victor is determined by other factors.
New England Patriots
Atlanta Falcons
Houston Texans
Baltimore Ravens
New Orleans Saints
Pittsburgh Steelers
Tennessee Titans
Philadelphia Eagles
Dynamic Simulation
In 2008, the leading preseason football magazine
was able to correctly predict only 2 of 8 division title
winners, and half of its predicted leaders finished
either third or fourth in their divisions.
NFL Football is notoriously difficult to predict. But the
Rational Sports Machine's objective mathematical
analysis and advanced statistical techniques gives it
the edge.
Each week, the Rational Sports Machine evaluates
the performance of every team in the NFL and
simulates the entire remaining regular season to
arrive at the projected regular season final standings.
The projections get increasingly accurate as the
season progresses. Check back each week to see
where your favorite team is likely to end up.
